In 2016, Niek Pulles uprooted his life in the Netherlands in exchange for a stint with the Nike innovation team in Portland, OR. The contemporary artist turned material designer has been making waves in the footwear industry ever since, crafting brand new silhouettes like the Nike React 87 and reworking old classics with collabs alongside Travis Scott, Virgil Abloh, and his previous client Comme Des Garcons. After graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven, Niek started his own studio HeyNiek exploring materials with zany experiments that ultimately led him to his current posting.

The Nike ISPA team, also known as 6xTeam, stands for Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, and Adapt. The innovative team focuses on the new athlete, urban commuters and creating footwear for city centric lives. By running experiments like tying 3 plastic bags around a new shoe for water resistance, and drilling wholes in Nike's React foam, the team comes up with ingenius ways to drive sneakers forward. Nick was one of the first recruits and was asked to join specifically for his expertise in innovative materials and silhouettes.
