Sterling Ruby

Raf’s right hand man.

Sterling Ruby is “one of the most interesting artists to emerge this century” according to Roberta Smith, the New York Times chief art critic. The German-born, Pennsylvania-raised contemporary artist works in basically every medium. From zany textiles to textured, imperfect ceramics, Ruby’s work is inspired by events from his own life. He recently moved into a custom-built 122,000 square-foot studio complex in Vernon, California, giving him more space to observe and think about the pieces he’s creating. That’s a f*ck ton of thinking space. When Sterling’s not in his artistic compound, you can find him collabing with Raf Simons, designing the Calvin Klein Parisian HQ, or showing at the most prolific museums in the world.

A Pitti Uomo alumni.

Sterling has dabbled in fashion since he was 13, learning to sew on his mom’s Singer sewing machine (that he still owns), and just launched his first collection last June. S. R. STUDIO. LA. CA. debuted at Pitti Uomo, the marquee menswear drop of the season, attracting fashion heavyweights like Virgil Abloh to fly out and witness it front row. Every piece of clothing was designed and realized by Ruby himself. Like his art, the collection pulled inspiration from his childhood and early life, growing up in small-town America. Ruby dropped the collection on his online store as the runway show aired and noted afterwards that this is only the beginning for the artist’s fashion career.

Getting personal.

Despite working in basically every medium, Sterling focuses on two main ideas; his own life and our post-everything society. Ruby credits his focus on ceramics to his Dutch mother that brought chunky, textured pottery to the U.S. after his family moved back from Germany, constantly referencing personal events in his work. Sterling’s work is basically an index of his life. Don’t let his surfer aesthetic fool you, Sterling Ruby is one of the most exciting creators around right now and we can’t wait to see the waves he makes in fashion.
